AFTER MONTHS OF ANXIOUS waiting, The Pikes football April to September season is finally here. No one knows what to expect of the Pikes this season. They were not able to fulfill the expectations laid out for them in 2007; yet despite minor setbacks the board is extremely optimistic about the new recruits and veteran players who just found their game too late last season.
The clubs immediate task for 2008 is to prevent the minor disappointments of 2007, senior Pikes ending the season in 4th place in the division and the cancellation of the Cheerleading championships for which the Pikes Cheerleaders were the host team; from overwhelming the positives of the season.
Those positive outcomes being the increased interest by the young men and women you make up the junior Pikes football and cheerleading teams as well as the overwhelming support from the community on their behalf.
The 2007 season was a good year for our junior Pikes football and cheerleading teams. The players and cheerleaders had fun, won games and finished with a good outlook for the coming year. For 2008, the club hopes to repeat their achievements with a goal to better last years stats, yet keeping in mind they should just have fun. The path to continued success for the junior teams is creating a positive team sporting experience while developing football and cheerleading fundamentals. These fundamentals reinforce the core values of sportsmanship including the challenge of competition, thrill of victory, reality of defeat, significance of commitment, and the ability to appreciate the importance of working together as a team.
s for the senior team, their have adopted the motto, Back to Basics. The team is determined to dig in, be resilient, solid and disciplined. Holding the words of Vince Lombardi close to heart Gentlemen, this is a football, the Pikes are starting the 2008 season with the basics and making sure theyre executing all the fundamentals needed to reach the playoffs in the regional league. For in their footsteps the senior Pikes cheerleading team is seriously entertaining seeking membership in a new cheerleading association, which will afford them the opportunity to compete a higher athletic level.
Getting back to basics will not only mean protecting the football, running the ball like we are capable of doing and throwing the ball when the opportunity presents itself; it will mean a change in game strategy especially with the new regional divisions playing schedule. Unlike the past season, with the league teams divided into groups, this year will see each team playing each other twice as the host and the visiting team. The schedule will result in fourteen games plus the playoffs. Despite the dedication of the players, time will be the judge of their stamina as they strive to juggle, family, jobs, practices and games. On a positive note the leagues playing field of teams is more evenly balanced this season, after the move to the GFL2 by the leagues top two teams Montabaur and Stuttgart. With such a well matched set of teams playing in the division this year and no team selected as a favorite from the start; fans will be in for a few surprises and a whole lot of fun.
